International Group for the Study of Neurogastroenterology and Motility.

CONSTITUTION

(proposal based on the discussion in Toulouse 2005 and to be discussed by the ISC in Los Angeles 2006)

1.The Group shall be known as the International Group for the Study of Neurogastroenterology and Motility.

2. The Group aims to organize symposia for the discussion of problems in neurogastroenterology and motility in relation to both clinical and basic studies and to encourage exchange of data on work in progress in the field.

3. The Group will have no fixed membership although it may prove necessary to restrict attendance at symposia to suit the requirements of any given meeting.

4. The Group will have a biannual international general symposium.

5. The Group will be guided by a Steering Committee of 12 members. Four members will be from Europe, four from North America and four from the other regions. The retiring Chairman of the Symposium will stay on as a non-voting Emeritus member for one additional term. The Steering Committee will be involved in the organization of biannual general symposia. At least one representative of the local committee organizing a general meeting should be a member of the Steering Committee for the previous two years.

6. Committee members will serve for a period of six years, two members normally retiring every two years. The members from Europe and North America will be appointed by, respectively, the ESNM and the AMS. For the members of the other regions, the Steering Committee will receive nominations of persons willing to serve as new members at lest one month before the general meeting. Nominations will be submitted to a vote by the General Assembly.

7. A person attending the general meeting will be regarded as a full participant. The organizer of the meeting will limit the number of non-active participants.

8. The Constitution can be amended only by a simple majority of the full participants in attendance at a general symposium, in a ballot, and following notice of the change being approved by the Steering Committee at the previous general symposium.

9. Amendments to the Constitution which have been accepted or rejected at any general meeting can only be reconsidered by the next general meeting, following agreement by two-thirds of the full participants in attendance.

Below are some of the discussion texts from Toulouse. Pale blue are changes compared ot the previous version.

1.The Group shall be known as the International Group for the Study of Neurogastroenterology and Motility.

2.The Group aims to organize symposia for the discussion of problems in gastrointestinal motility in relation to both clinical and basic studies and to encourage exchange of data on work in progress in the field.

3.The Group will have no fixed membership although it may prove necessary to restrict attendance at symposia to suit the requirements of any given meeting.

The informal nature of symposia generally is best achieved by restricting attendance of full participants to not more than 400 300 persons. (Originally this read "to no more than 100 persons", however this was amended first to 180 and next to 300 (Rome 1995) persons).

4.The Group will have a biannual international general symposium.

5.The Group will be guided by a Steering Committee of 12 members.  Four members will be from Europe, four from North America and four  from the other regions.  The retiring Chairman of the Symposium will stay on as a non-voting Emeritus member for one additional term. The Steering Committee may suggest speakers and give other advice for the  biannual general symposium. At least one representative of the local committee organizing a general meeting should be a member of the Steering Committee for the previous two years.
(Originally this read: "The Group will be guided by a Steering Committee of six members, of whom three shall be from the continent of Europe". The number was first increased to eight (Rochester, 1985) and then to nine (Kobe 1991) and the article was rephrased to "The Group will be guided by a Steering Committee of nine members, of whom a minimum of four members shall be from Europe (to include one member from the British Isles), a minimum of three members from North America (to include one member from Canada), and at least one member from the other regions". In Lorne it was decided to drop references to specific nationalities. In Madison the number of members "from other regions" was increased to 2, still later to three).

6.Committee members will serve for a period of six years, two members normally retiring every two years.  The members from Europe and North America will be appointed by, respectively, the ESNM and the AMS. The members of the other regions will be selected by the Steering Committee. For this purpose the Steering Committee will  seek advice from the retiring members from the other regions. An invitation to submit nominations from the research community will be posted on the website of the next meeting, as part of this process the Steering Committee may also add nominations itself.  If there are more nominations than seats, the Steering Committee will make a selection by vote. recommend nominees for election, by majority vote., by full participants at the biannual general symposium. In event of rejection of these nominees by the general meeting, other nominees from the meeting will be elected by majority of votes.

7.A person attending the general meeting will be regarded as a full participant. provided the invitation has been agreed to by a 2/3 majority of the Steering Committee in advance of the meeting. The organizer of the meeting will limit the number of non-active participants (without their name on an accepted abstract) to no more than 60.

8.The Constitution can be amended only by a simple majority of the full participants in attendance at a general symposium, in a ballot, and following notice of the change being approved by the Steering Committee at the previous general symposium.

9.Amendments to the Constitution which have been accepted or rejected at any general meeting can only be reconsidered by the next general meeting, following agreement by two-thirds of the full participants in attendance.
